One Cool App! AppZapper

Written by Bryan Los on March 20th, 2006 @ 6:08 PM

AppZapper

Everybody loves the drag and drop nature of OS X. Drag an app into your applications folder, and it’s installed. You’d think it would be that easy to delete an app — just a matter of dragging it to the trash. But it’s not. Applications install preferences, caches, and other support files throughout your computer that take up space and generate clutter. Deleting these by hand every time you delete an app is a pain.

Chef Walks Out On The Boys

South Park Cast

Isaac Hayes has quit “South Park,” where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion. Hayes, who has played the school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

“There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins.”

“Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices.”

VOICE-O-GRAPH: Wednesday, July 21, 1948

Written by Bryan Los on March 15th, 2006 @ 10:38 PM

VOICE-O-GRAPH

What were you doing on Wednesday, July 21, 1948? Well, my godparents, who were my mother’s aunt and uncle, were celebrating my godfather’s birthday at a local amusement park, Mountain Park, along with my grandparents and other relatives.

This day should have just sank to the bottom of the endless puddle of time. Just one day in a long series of days, weeks, months, years, and millennia. But what is so special about this day is that there is a pictorial representation, and as of today, a sound remembrance of those festivities on that Wednesday in July of 1948.

The Bright Vista

Windows Vista

A Mac user praising Microsoft? Yup! Every now and then ole’ Bill has a really great idea.

The idea worth mentioning is called the Windows Performance Rating, a feature in the upcoming Windows Vista OS, which will rate a PC based on how well it is running and on how much it can take advantage of Vista’s capabilities.

The Windows Performance Rating evaluates components such as the processor, the memory, the hard drive and graphics cards to come up with an overall score. The rating appears in a large blue circle and can be seen in multiple places in the operating system. The main rating is on a scale of 1 to 5, but individual components are also given a “sub rating.”

E=mc1337… problems

Albert Einstein

For no apparent reason, the Scripted Lizard web site was down for some time last night. When the site finally came back up today, some WordPress files were so screwed up, I had to do a clean install of WordPress v2.0.2.

It wasn’t really a problem installing 2.0.2, but I had to edit some of the files I customized, which took about an hour. The site seems a bit slow, but all appears to be back to normal now.

Going, Going, Gone!

eBay

eBay could as easily have been named eBuy, cause that’s just what I did for six years– buying over 1,000 items. Sadly, I don’t buy on eBay as much as I did, so in essence this is like a farewell letter.

How I Got Started

Back in February 1998, eBay was new to me. I don’t quite remember how I stumbled upon it, but once I was there I quickly became quite the fan. I mean, I saw toys that I remember destroying when I was a kid. Hundreds, thousands of dollars worth of toys I destroyed went flashing across my mind. Could this be true? Could I get a second chance at childhood and savor all those childhood memories again? The short answer was yes.

My ‘59 Historic Les Paul… Ain’t She Sweet

Written by Bryan Los on March 9th, 2006 @ 2:34 AM

Les Paul

It wasn’t until the late 1960s, when rock and blues players like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Mike Bloomfield began to discover and capitalize on the fat, warm voice of the ‘59 Standard. This moment in history marked the beginning of the idealization of the ‘59 Les Paul as the Holy Grail of guitars in the minds of professionals, collectors, and weekend warriors.

What Is It?

This guitar is part of the Gibson Historic Collection, and is the most accurate reissue series Gibson’s Custom Shop has ever produced. If you could walk into a music store in 1959 and buy a Les Paul off the shelf, this is exactly what you’d get. Needless to say, the guitar is simply gorgeous.

This guitar is fairly expensive, even for Custom Shop models, but it’s worth every penny! From the AA flamed maple top, to the solid mahogany neck and back, this guitar just shouts “quality” at every curve. If you are going to own only one Gibson, this certainly is the one to own.
