Quick Hits: What’s What In The News?

July 16th, 2009 Bryan Los No comments

This is the first of a weekly piece I will call “What’s What In The News?” I will list about five items that have been in the news for the past week and briefly comment on each. The purpose isn’t to get too deep, but to just touch on the surface with a few sentences. You can explore more by following the hyperlinks that accompany each Quick Hit.

Sears Tower No Longer

Another foreign company has bought a home-grown symbol of American ingenuity. Residents of Chicago refuse to call it anything other than the Sears Tower. Good for them. Denver Broncos fans went through the same thing, and the company that bought the naming rights had to keep “Mile High” in the official title.

The Wise Latina

I so much enjoy Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and all other right-wing, conservative nut jobs squirming in their seats, hot-headed over the eventual nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. It’s a done deal. Put a fork in it and get the ketchup ready.

Google’s Gmail Turns Five

April 5th, 2009 Bryan Los No comments

Ok… but why would I want the world to know that while I’m still in BETA!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, really, five years and Gmail still is in beta? Either this is an inside joke, or these are some of the most procrastinatory souls on the planet, that Gmail team.

It’s been so long I don’t even use Gmail anymore. Maybe I’ll check them out when they hit…. version one? WoW.

Blueberry Surprise

March 27th, 2009 Bryan Los No comments

I wish I didn’t have to write this one… but while the taste is still in my mouth, so to speak, I’ll get this one off my chest.

So I bought half a blueberry pie, ReddiWip, and some Organic Cow whole milk from Stop & Shop tonight. I haven’t had blueberry pie in ages, so I thought it would be a nice treat. Granted, it’s not the best pie in the world, but at least it was once made from natural ingredients, and sold near the bakery, which is good enough for me.

QuickHit: Rejuvinate Old Velcro

March 27th, 2009 Bryan Los No comments

This one happened upon me due to my own personal needs. My MacBook Pro nylon carrying case has a velcro flap. Over two years or so, the velcro has become quite “non-sticking” and easily tears away. I thought for a second, and without hesitation, I took a small pair of scissors I found in my bathroom and proceeded to trim off some of the excess “hair” on the loop side.

As you may know, standard velcro consists of two sides– one side has hooks, which when come into contact with the loop side, forms a tight fastening. After repeated opening and closings, the loop side fabric can become stretched, fatigued, and otherwise a bit worse for wear.

Snipping off just enough of the frayed fibers gave me a much better fit. Now, when I press both ends together, and give it a little extra wiggle, the velcro makes for a much better fit. Now, I can actually hear that “ripping” sound when I open my flap.

So if you’re velcro is getting long in the tooth, give this a try. Only remove a small amount of loop fiber at a time, then test. Remember, you have to keep some fiber so the hooks can find their target.

The Longest Yard

June 20th, 2006 Bryan Los 2 comments

After
After

Want to know where I’ve been the last few weeks? I’ve only been killing my back and roasting in the sun. The backyard was the main work area, but work stretched to the front of the house as well as the side. I was pretty handy with a chainsaw too!

The grass (sod) is only a week old in the picture. It took 130 rolls to cover the yard. When moist, these rolls can weigh 20 or more pounds. Try loading, unloading, then carrying 130 20-pound rolls around in a day! Trust me, you don’t want to. I had help, but it still was a b@tch. I was never so dirty.

Icons!

The icons pictured above are for the Mac mail app.

I found this great site that offers icons, themes and backgrounds for Windows, Linux and Mac. The icons are super-high quality. I’ve tested the Mac versions, and they are truly amazing.

Be sure to stop by InterfaceLIFT and download some icons!

So Long, Tom

April 5th, 2006 Bryan Los No comments

Tom Delay

Republican Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas, the House of Representatives’ fallen majority leader, withdrew on Tuesday from a re-election race he was in danger of losing due to scandals and said he would quit Congress by mid-June.

It’s nice to see such misfortune happen to the worst of people. To say I’m not giddy with delight would be a lie one the caliber of the bombs DeLay dropped regularly during his term in Congress. Good riddance to such rubbish. It’s guys like this that make Washington the cesspool it has become.

Tom, don’t let the door hit you on the way out, and be sure to take some of your “friends” with you.

My Fox News Channel Funny

My First Comic

Update! 03.23.06 – I guess I’m not so crazy after all thinking Fox News Channel is so right-leaning. It appears Dick Cheney knows the same thing. Here’s the proof!

Just sitting and thinking to myself how one-sided Fox News Channel is, I kind of giggled this thought to myself. I decided to put my thought down on paper, well a virtual piece of paper, and create this comic using Photoshop, and my new favorite tool, the pen tool.

Having been a viewer of Fox News Channel for almost a decade now, I can honestly say that this comic pretty much sums up the network. If you are a loyal viewer of Fox News, I hope you are offended.

E=mc1337… problems

March 15th, 2006 Bryan Los No comments

Albert Einstein

For no apparent reason, the Scripted Lizard web site was down for some time last night. When the site finally came back up today, some WordPress files were so screwed up, I had to do a clean install of WordPress v2.0.2.

It wasn’t really a problem installing 2.0.2, but I had to edit some of the files I customized, which took about an hour. The site seems a bit slow, but all appears to be back to normal now.

We all know that Dick Cheney shot a guy. We all know that Dick Cheney is an idiot. Need I say anything further? No!
